Epic vs Legendary Heroes: What the Numbers Say About Where to Invest

A common question from newer players is whether a well-built Legendary can do the job of an Epic. The base stats in IGG’s hero data answer most of that question on their own. The build data adds a second, less obvious answer.

Base stats by rarity

Median values across each rarity, using the base stats in IGG’s official hero data:

RarityHeroesBase ATKBase HPATK growth/lvlHP growth/lvlMove speed
Epic10040012,500+19+305320
Legendary912202,900+13+160240
Elite91601,500+8+75150
Ordinary8155910+7+45145

The gap between Epic and Legendary is big:

  • The lowest-HP Epic (Dynamica, 9,800) has almost double the base HP of the highest-HP Legendary (Michael, 5,500).
  • The weakest-hitting Epic (290 ATK) is roughly level with the hardest-hitting Legendary (Ronin, 300 ATK).
  • Epics also grow faster per level in both ATK and HP.

That’s before skills. Modern Epic kits usually include built-in damage reduction, per-hit damage caps (Sturdy, “can’t take more than 40,000 per hit”), condition immunity and self-healing. Legendary kits mostly don’t.

Build consensus by rarity

The second answer comes from how much top players agree on builds. For each hero, we averaged the top pick rate across talent, insignia, square insignia, enchantment and trait:

RarityMedian build consensus
Epic32.2%
Legendary19.1%
Elite13.6%
Ordinary11.6%

Top players agree on Epic builds far more than on Legendary builds. The likely reason: top players invest heavily and deliberately in Epics, so the data reflects carefully optimized builds. Legendary builds are more scattered, which suggests fewer top players are putting serious resources into them.

The enchantment slot shows this clearly. Holy Conviction is #1 for 78 of 100 Epics. For Legendaries, the most common #1 enchantment (Malaise) averages under 10%. There’s effectively no agreed enchantment for Legendaries. (See our enchantment breakdown.)

The Legendaries that still get serious builds

Some Legendaries do have settled builds, meaning top players still invest in them deliberately:

LegendaryBuild consensus
Minotaur Chieftain51.4%
Treantaur45.5%
Ronin39.2%
Lazulix38.3%
Rambard38.1%
Wallawalla36.9%

Minotaur Chieftain’s number is higher than most Epics’. If you’re going to invest in Legendaries, heroes like these, with a clear build, are the safer bets.

Legendary builds follow different rules

When you do build a Legendary, don’t copy an Epic build. The top-player data shows distinct patterns:

SlotEpics usually runLegendaries usually run
TalentRevive (41), Sacred Light (24)Flame Guard (25), Sacred Light (20), Revitalize (11)
InsigniaEmpower (31), Survival (23)Revitalize (22), Brawler’s Favor (15), Empower (15)
Square insigniaWinged Rebirth (69)Tyranny (25), Time Steer (17), Winged Rebirth (16)
TraitAccuracy (88)Accuracy (38), Dodge (26), ATK (17)

Legendary builds lean toward Flame Guard (HP plus damage deflection), Tyranny (crit and fixed crit damage, used only by Legendaries), and Dodge. These fit heroes with small HP pools that can’t rely on built-in damage reduction.

Where to spend

  1. Epics first. Their base stats are several times higher, and top players invest in them with clear, agreed builds.
  2. Legendaries: pick ones with a settled build. If a Legendary’s hero page shows mostly “contested” or “no consensus” slots, top players aren’t investing in it either.
  3. Revitalize is the budget talent. On Legendaries, Elites and Ordinary heroes used as one-cast openers, a full-energy start is often the best talent available. It’s #1 for 6 of 9 Elites and 5 of 8 Ordinary heroes.
  4. Elite and Ordinary heroes have almost no consensus in the top-player data. They’re placeholders, not investments.
